Demographic Trends in the EU

Demographic Trends in the EU

Length: 70 minutes

The Antall József Knowledge Center and the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies organise an online conference which aims to present current demographic trends and their future impacts, as well as to discuss possible incentive packages that could provide long-term solutions for the continent. Aging population and low birth rates are one of the main challenges for the European Union both in economic and labour market terms and in family policy. The ever-decreasing proportion of children and young people in society, together with the shrinking working-age population, requires new solutions and proposals at both the national and EU level. While the Western European Member States can partially address their demographic challenges by workforce flow from the Eastern European countries, emigration poses a significant challenge for the eastern part of the European Union. Demography determines many aspects of our life and society. The economy, labour market, healthcare, pensions, intergenerational fairness and election results–they are all driven by demography.
